At first, I rented a copy of the Q2 from the good folks at Lens Rental.  From the first image I took, I could tell that all this mystique about images from Leica cameras and lenses was true.  Great colors, contrast and overall rendering was just beautiful.  So is the camera!  It looks like a piece of artwork yet it's certainly sturdy to handle the elements whether out in the rain and snow, or the cold.

The camera very much reminds me of the Sony RX1 series . . . single focal length camera with no ability to change lenses.  That's right, the Q2 has a 28mm f/1.7 Summilux lens.  That's it . . .28mm which is a focal length that, to me, is perfect for travel and street photography.  With a 47 mp sensor however, there's plenty of real estate for cropping.

Now, I'm not one for doing technical in-depth reviews so I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Ripples . . .

legend lake 052513-57Diamonds & Ripples

As the weather gets warmer and the ice on the lake begins to dwindle, thoughts of peaceful sunny mornings on the lake start to fill my mind.  A gentle throttle creates ripples on the water that reflect the colors of the sky and trees.  Sometimes the colors are subtle but it you look for it in the boat trail patterns, a kaleidoscope of colors will be there.

Going Back in Time One of the fun surprises in this rebranding and formatting of this site it seeing images that have been hiding on my hard drive that I’ve forgotten about. Sometimes it’s finding an image that was simply passed over but now seems like it shouldn’t have been.  Today, image is the latter.

Taken a few years ago during my first (and, to this day only) visit to Yosemite.  This is, of course, Tunnel View made famous by Ansel Adams and photographed by thousands of others.  This one was taken at dawn.  I spent three wonderful days at Yosemite and most of that time in a 1 on 1 experience with the well know, William Neill.  the image reminds me of the few days we spent together.  If you’ve never had a personalized workshop like this, I highly recommend it and if you decide to spend time at Yosemite, I highly recommend Bill.  Not only did I learn a lot from the experience but he’s such a great guy, a warm soul and we just had a blast.

Time to Restart As I looked over my entire website, I realize I was way overdue for an update.  My last blog entry was almost three years ago . . . can that be?  I have many images and stories that have gone unshared.  Well, what finally got me to update this site is that I am soon to be a guest artist in the Inside and Out gallery in Northeast Minneapolis.  More to come on that soon but it has given me the motivation to rebrand to Bob Israel Photography, freshen up the website and start making blog entries again.  I'll be adding more content over time.

So, this blog will continue with the same themes as before.  It's my daily wanderings blog so where ever I am, I'll post an image or two.  Sometimes that's all but sometimes there will be story to go with it.  Sometimes I might talk about gear, shooting technique or post processing.  In fact, I'd love to hear what you might be interested to hear!  For now, I'm glad to get started once again.

As the weather finally warms . . . here's wishing for a quick ice out on Lake Minnetonka! untitled-42untitled-42

Sony Reflection App Sony mirrorless cameras have the ability to load apps for use in the camera to create a number of interesting effects (  While many dismiss these as 'toys' I'm finding that some can be quite useful.  One of these apps is called the Smooth Reflection app.  This app lets you easily take magical long-exposure photos that normally require an ND filter. For example, you can make lakes covered with ripples look as smooth as glass. The Smooth Reflection app creates fantastical long-exposure effects without an attached ND filter by combining a sequence of continuous shots into one photo.

While there are number of presets, I prefer to use the custom mode where I can set the number of exposures for the app to combine.  In the examples below, each is a composite of 128 images.  Exposure length for each image was generally under 1 sec or whatever the scene called for.  The results is an image that emulates the use of an ND filter.  This becomes quite valuable for certain lenses with fixed hoods or if I simply left my ND filters at home!

Let's Try This Again

It's been a while since my last post.  I seem to post images everywhere (Facebook, Flickr, Fred Miranda) but on my own blog.  Well, it's time to change.  My focus will be on my Daily Wanderings.  Sometimes it may just be images and other times I might discuss my gear . . . or both!

The images below are explorations on the capabilities of a favorite camera lens combination, The 42MP Sony A7rII paired with the Sony/Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/1.4.  The images below were taken pre-dawn and are all handheld and range from an ISO 2000 - 12800.  The images are also taken at F/1.4-2.0.  The high ISO capabilities of this camera is simply amazing.

Lakewood Memorial Chapel I've been wanting to visit the Lakewood Memorial Chapel for some time now, having heard about the mosaic tile work being among the best in North America.  I was not disappointed.  This image was created by stitching 5, 5-bracketed HDR images (for a total of 25 images) to create this panorama.  For more about the chapel, here's an excerpt from the website:

The Memorial Chapel at Lakewood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as the architectural focal point of the cemetery.  The building was designed by prominent Minneapolis architect Harry Wild Jones and was modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey.

The chapel interior was created by New York designer Charles Lamb and many consider it the most perfect example of Byzantine mosaic art in the United States.  In 1909, Lamb traveled to Rome to enlist the services of six highly accomplished mosaic artists who had just recently completed a project in the Vatican.  The artists created more than 10 million mosaic pieces, called tessellae, from marble, colored stone, and glass fused with gold and silver.  The artists then traveled to Minneapolis to assemble the work inside the chapel.  Upon its completion in 1910, the Lakewood Memorial chapel was the only building in the country with an authentic mosaic interior.

This bridge, completed about a year ago at a cost of over $100 million, has a totally modern design and looks like something you might typically see in Europe or Asia.

Alma, WI Alma, Wisconsin is a 19th century river town perched on a narrow strip of land between the Mississippi River and 500-foot limestone bluffs.  With a population of less than 800, Alma is only two streets wide and has 12 unique stairstep streets and a "dugway" to the top of the bluff.  In 1982 over 200 buildings were included in the designation of the City of Alma as a National Historic District because of our preservation of waterfront 19th century buildings.  Built into the river bluffs in the style of a European village and bordered by the mighty Mississippi River, Alma is a unique Wisconsin treasure .

The town has a charm all it's own with galleries, restaurants and Buena Vista Park which sits high on a bluff offering spectacular views such as the one shown in this image.

A Nose With Ears I was back out wandering around the towns of Red Wing, MN and Alma, WI and everything in between.  While we were looking for fall color but we didn't see all that much in this region.  Either the leaves are way behind most other areas due to the warmth of the Mississippi or it just won't be a colorful fall.

Along the way, we came upon a red barn scene.  There were a couple of horses grazing which really helped the composition.  The horses ended up being very curious and friendly coming right up to the fence where we were standing.  I quickly changed to an ultra wide angle lens and captured this shot where it seems like the horse is all snout with a couple of ears.

Organic in Nature I stumbled upon this title for a new series that I will continue to develop using intentional camera movement.  I first caught on to this technique during my visit to Yosemite National Park studying under famed landscape photographer, William Neill.  Bill shared some of his techniques and after capturing some scenes in Yosemite, I'm continuing to explore.  Autumn seems like a great time to experiment with this technique as the colors provide more interest and intrigue to the images.  This image resulted from zooming in during exposure pointing the camera at some brightly lit leaves almost directly above me.  See the new portfolio, Organic in Nature

Minneapolis Sunset I've been shooting quite a bit of late with the Sony RX1, a full frame 35mm f/2 fixed focal length camera and lens.  The lens is a Zeiss Sonnar and matched to the sensor.  Personally, I find that this camera is as close to a Leica like experience as I've ever seen.  The 24MP sensor has outstanding dynamic range allowing me to photograph this scene into the sun and be able to draw out the details in the skyline while keeping the sun from looking all too harsh.

Clash of Cultures [REPOST]  At first I posted this image as an example of 'almost' a good image.  I was disappointed that the woman walking had her eyes closed.  However, I have been overwhelmed with the response to this image.  I recently posted this image on Flickr where it made Explore and now has almost 4,000 views, 100+ favorites and numerous comments.  Most have commented that the woman is looking away, almost with disdain, from the flashy advertisement yet, she carries a cell phone in her hand.  It's a story line I was looking for when I spotted the scene and quickly took the image.  So, I'm reposting this entry with the title I originally intended for the shot.

I caught this scene this afternoon which I would have titled 'Culture Clash' but I was disappointed that the woman's eyes were closed.  I even thought I had set the camera to shoot several frames per second to make sure I 'got the shot.'  However, it was not to be.  I like this spot and I often find interesting scenes like this quite often.  I just need to hang out here rather than walk by.

National Eagle Center I made my first ever visit to the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN.  It's a great place to learn anything and everything about eagles.  Of course, the best part is that they have several eagles that can be seen up close.  These are birds that have been injured or sick and brought to the center to be rehabilitated.  The birds they have there cannot be returned to the wild for many reasons.  Mostly they can no long fly and would not be able to hunt for food.

While there, I was able to see some eagles flying over the Mississippi.  In winter, Bald Eagles are known to flock to this area due to open water in the river giving them a place to find food.

Gold Medal Flour Times Two I shot this scene once before but this time with a little sunset color.  Also, last time I shot this with a micro 4/3 Olypmus OMD EM-5.  This time I used my Canon 5D Mark III and a Zeiss 15mm Distagon.  It's hard to create a perfect mirror image in this spot.  At the end of this mirrored box is an evergreen shrub which if nothing else, gets in my face where I can quite see what I'm doing!

Last night I had the chance to go out, walk around and do some shooting!  The sky color at dusk was brief but gave this orange glow as a great back drop to a silhouetted Gold Medal Flour mill.

Almost . . .

Yet Another Glorious Beginning Another wonderful sunrise on Legend Lake in Keshena, WI.  It seems as the weather turns cool, the day is greeted by wonderful bright colors before the sun rises above the lake.  The morning temperature is in the low 50s and the hint of fall is in the air but as the sun rises, it's warmth brings summer back for one more day.

September Morning Legend Lake 090713-118

Early September and the crowds are mostly gone.  There's no one on the lake this morning the water only had ripples made by fish breaking the water for their breakfast.  The sun poked through some clouds creating this beautiful sunrise on Legend Lake, WI.

Iconic View Daily Wanderings 081613-82-Edit-2

Last night a friend called wanting to do some shooting at sunset of the downtown Minneapolis.  He had seen many photographs of this view and wanted to take his turn having recently purchased a new camera.  This view has become one of the iconic views of Minneapolis and why not.  With a view of the skyline, both new and old, and the Stone Arch Bridge with its lighted arches, it's a good scene.  Apparently, every photographer in the city knows about this spot.  It's certainly has easy access but last night my friend and I were joined by about a dozen other photographers taking a class.  The only problem is that this particular spot only has room for about a half dozen people with bags and tripods!  Needless to say, it got crowded!

Reflecting Pool Daily Wanderings 081513-8

What I love about Minneapolis is the fact that I can walk to work.  As I always carry a camera, I like to vary my route even if it's simply walking on the other side of the street.  It's amazing sometimes how such a subtle change in perspective leads to new views and compositions.  I usually photograph this reflecting pool from one of its corners but this time, the worker cleaning to pool caught my attention.

August Day's End I've been waiting all summer for the skies to change from cloudless sunsets to something with more drama.  Each day it seems the clouds would simply evaporate as the sun went down.  As the calendar turned to August, so did the weather and I've been treated with wonderful skies at sunset.

The Bean I've seen many images of The Bean in Chicago but never had the opportunity to photograph it myself.  Being a warm summer day, people were all over this thing.  I kept thinking about making some images that would incorporate all these people versus my usual desire to deal with the subject by itself.  I only snapped a few images more as a momento than anything that would qualify as fine art.  However, as I explored The Bean further, some nice abstracts came to mind where the people looked more like ants.

Learning and Using the Sony RX100 M2 RX100 072913-21-Edit

I recent got the new Sony RX100 M2 (version 2).  I was surprised how small it is.  It makes the Sony RX1 look and feel very large.  My Canon 5D Mark III?  Well, you get the idea.  It seems the camera industry is on the verge of a major change.  The quality that these little beasts put out is truly amazing and the flexibility in shooting with these is similar to how I would shoot with my DSLR.  I have to admit, I really like the smaller cameras and not lugging all that heavy stuff around.  But I don't think I can part with that equipment just yet.
